Luisa
(Sam) holds a PGCE,
Master of Arts Degree Dance Studies (distinction) and Specialist Diploma in "El
Arte Flamenco" (distinction) from Sevilla where she trained in Andalucia,
Spain. She is a member of Equity and the Institute for Learning, and began dancing professionally, at 11 years, on TV and in London’s West End
productions. She received dance scholarships from Royal Academy,
Equity, London Contemporary, and from the Dancer's Trust to study her specialist
certificate in Flamenco dance.
In Spain, she performed choreographies by Carmen Ledezma, Isabel Bayon, Hiniesta Cortes, Rafael Campallo, Javier Baron, Milagros Menjibar, and Manolo Soler at La Fundacion and Teatro Sol, Sevilla. In Portugal, she performed with Suite Española from Madrid in “El Feticio de Gitana”; in Greece with Constandina & Stamatis Gonithez, in France's Vinci Theatre, and in London's West End in shows with artists as diverse as Apache Indian and Catherine Zeta Jones. The Stage newspaper this year described her as an "exceptional talent."
Recently, Sam has performed five operas at the Royal Opera House in Francesca Zambello's production of Bizet's "Carmen", Jurgen Flimm's production of Beethoven's "Fidelio", and Keith Warner's production of Wagner's Ring Cycle with Placido Domingo. Sam has also danced in numerous flamenco companies in UK including "El Aire flamenco", "Duende Flamenco", "Flamenco Fusion", "Diva Flamenca", "Candela Flamenca", "Flamenco Fiesta", "Alegria Flamenca", and "Camino Flamenco". Her TV credits include “Campion”, “Top of the Pops”, “Access All Areas”, “The Word”, “From the Top”, "Dancing in the Street". Adverts include: Wrigleys, Glaxo, Häagen-Dazs, BT, Sky, and Rover. She has also taught and choreographed flamenco for events including Trafalgar Square's Record Breaking "BigDance", "Move It Flamenco" at Olympia, David Rolphe (BAFTA) production of "Poets", Scottish National Galleries, and the Scoop at London City Hall. Sam was also the Momentum West London Dance Artist in Residence last year, where she continues to teach and choreograph fusion performances for UK festivals.
In 2008-9, Sam returned to the Covent Garden stage in Zambello's 2008 revival of Bizet's "Carmen", and choreographed the new production of Carmen at Leeds Castle. She was choreographer and principle flamenco dancer in both touring productions of Carmen this year, and principle flamenco dancer in Raymond Gubbay's production of Carmen at the Royal Albert Hall. Her TV credits this year include appearing alongside cantaor Fernando de Sevilla on BBC2s "Manet" documentary on the life of the painter and with "El Aire" Persian-flamenco Co. on !KOOK music tuning! for BBC Persia.
